Vulcan comeback erased during OT loss to Hawks, 87-85

OAKLAND, Calif.—Hawai`i Hilo battled back from a 17-point deficit and also rode a 33-point effort from Trey Ingram, but still came up two points short in overtime during an 87-85 setback to Holy Names on Thursday night at Tobin Gymnasium.

Holy Names, who defeated defending Pacific West Conference champion Hawai`i Pacific two weeks ago, snapped a three-game losing streak with the loss to move to 4-6 in the PacWest and 8-12 overall. The Vulcans fell to 3-5 in conference action and to 4-11 on the year.

Ingram established a career high with his 33-point outburst, and he also had seven points, four assists and three steals. His previous collegiate best was 28 points as a sophomore when he played for Saint Martin's (against Concordia OR).

Eric Wattree and Ryley Callaghan added 13 points each for UH Hilo. Randan Berinobis added 10 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots before fouling out. Devin Johnson returned after missing the last two games, and he listed eight points, five rebounds and two blocks in the scorebook.

It was a crushing loss for the Vulcans, especially after fighting back from a large deficit, taking a late lead, and then watching the Hawks steal the momentum and the win.

The Hawks were lights out from three-point range in the first half. They hit 6-of-10 from behind the arch in the first eight minutes to take a 24-17 lead, and they would nail 9-of-17 before the half was over. Six different players would connect behind the three-point line.

Ingram did his best to keep the Vulcans within shouting distance with 18 first-half points, more than half of the Vulcans' total as the Hawks led at the break, 49-35. Holy Names led by as many as 17 points (37-21) before intermission.

The Hawks pushed their lead to 17 points early in the second half, but the Vulcans began pecking away at that margin. Three-pointers by Ingram, Callaghan and Wattree cut the deficit to eight points (62-54) with just under 12 minutes to play. Johnson second dunk of the night, coming out of the media timeout, made it 62-56.

Wattree followed up with another trey with 9:30 on the clock to help his team creep to within three points (62-59), and a driving lay-up by Ingram one possession later made it a two-point game at 63-61.

With a chance to tie, the Vulcans then missed on their next two trips down the court, and the Hawks converted theirs (67-61). Then, the momentum really swung the Vulcans way.

Randan Berinobis scored on back-to-back possessions, including one where he blocked a Hawk shot and took it coast to coast for the score. Ingram then hit a deep three to give UHH their first lead of the night (68-67). There were then three lead changes before another Ingram three-ball made the count 73-71 in favor of the Vulcans.

After buckets by Wattree and Jared Roffler, UH Hilo led 77-73, and they pushed their cushion to 79-74 with two minutes left on an Ingram bucket, off a lead pass from Callaghan.

But 30 seconds later, Berinobis picked up his fifth foul and the Hawks converted a three-point play to make it a two-point game again. Ingram then hit a 17-footer in traffic with just over a minute to play (81-77), but the Vuls would not score in regulation again.

The Vulcans missed the front end of three one-and-one free throw opportunities in the final minute and Jacob Dean's spinning lay-up tied the game with 14 seconds left, sending the game into overtime.

The Hawks never trailed in the extra period as UHH couldn't to find the basket. Callaghan finally scored with 2:17 left and Cleo Cain banked one home with 1:34 remaining to pull within two points (87-85). Cain then took a charge at the other end of the court, giving the Vulcans one last chance to tie or win the game.

Ingram brought the ball up the court but had to settle for an NBA-range three with two seconds left and it didn't fall, giving Holy Names the win.

Alonzo Taylor led the Hawks with 22 points. HNU cooled off from three-point range in the second half but still finished 11-of-25. UH Hilo hit 12-of-30 of their attempts.

The Vulcans will wrap up this four-game road trip on Saturday with a 4 p.m. (Pacific time) contest at Dominican, looking to snap a four-game losing streak.
