Vulcans win thriller in OT, 68-63

HILO, Hawai`i—UH Hilo's Safia Sheikh scored 13 of her team's final 16 points, including a trio of three-pointers to help lead the Vulcans to a 68-63 overtime win over Academy of Art on Friday night at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

The senior guard finished with 23 points on the night as the Vulcans improved to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the Pacific West Conference. The Urban Knights fell to 2-14 on the year and to 1-7 in the PacWest.

Freshman post Allie Navarette added 22 points and nine rebounds, and Danielle Dacosta was also in double figures with 12 points, ten of those in the first half.

Pre'Franz Dominic had monster game with 26 points and 17 rebounds for AAU.

Sheikh hit a three-pointer to put the Vulcans up for good (64-62) with 1:45 left in overtime, and then drained another bucket as the shot clock expired with 15 seconds left to seal the win. She only had two points in the first, scoring 21 points after intermission.

Earlier, it looked to be a shootout between Dominick and Navarette. The first 15 points of the night, in the first five minutes of the game were scored by two people—eight by Dominick of AAU and seven from UHH's Navarette, as the two post players began the game in a shootout.

Later in the first period, AAU's Jazzlyn Brewster converted a three-pointer and a conventional three-point play to help give the Urban Knights a 19-16 lead at the end of the quarter.

But from the end of the first quarter through the first half of the second quarter, the Vulcans outscored their visitors, 14-1. Eight of those points came from Dacosta, four from Navarette. UH Hilo would go on to outpace the Urban Knights 16-6 in the quarter to take a 32-25 lead into intermission.

Academy of Art would battle back in the third, behind 12 points from Dominick. They cut the Vulcan lead to 47-44 on a Dominick basket with 35 seconds left, and that would be the score as the game headed into the fourth quarter.

Dominick would shine again in the fourth quarter, pulling her team into a 52-52 tie with 3:56 left.  Sheikh and Ines Medina then took the spotlight, with UHH's Sheikh drilling two treys and a jumper from the top of the key. Medina countered with three treys, including one that banked off the backboard. Medina's third three-ball of the fourth period tied the game at 61-61 with a minute left. Neither team was able to score in the final 60 seconds, sending the game into overtime, where Sheikh shined again.

Medina finished with 17 points for AAU and Brewster added 16.

The Vulcans will now hit the road for a four-game set in northern California, beginning with a January 20 contest at Fresno Pacific.
