KEAAU, Hilo—In match between two top defensive teams, an early goal can look bigger than just one point on the scoreboard. Two goals can look like a mountain to overcome.
The Hawai`i Hilo women's soccer team scored twice in the first 15 minutes against Biola, and made that stand up for a 2-0 victory in a critical Pacific West Conference match under the lights on Tuesday night at Paiea Stadium.
With the victory, the Vulcans pulled into a tie for second place with the Eagles, both now at 4-1-1. UH Hilo improved to 7-2-2 overall in 2018, and Biola is now 6-4-3. Point Loma leads the PacWest with a 5-0-1 mark.
The Vulcans wasted no time in putting the pressure on their visitors, scoring less than three minutes into the match.
Senior
Jaimie Salas gathered a rebound that bounced off a pair of players and flicked it into the goal, straight on from 13 yards out, before most of the fans had even settled into their seats (2:45). It was the third goal of the season for Salas.
Just past the 15
th minute, the Vulcans scored in a way that Biola likely didn't expect. Defender
Lucy Maino dribbled the ball down the right sideline, into Eagle territory, and then suddenly stopped and launched a shot from 30 yards out. The ball sailed over the head of Biola goalkeeper Viviana Poli and into the net, giving the Vulcans a 2-0 margin.
UH Hilo only had one more shot on goal in the first half, and Biola had four—two of which had to be saved by UHH keeper
Bailey Cahill.
The Vulcans kept the pressure on early in the second half, firing three shots (two on goal) in the first 15 minutes at new Eagle keeper Alyssa Joel. It took 19 minutes for Biola to get a shot in the second half, saved by Cahill.
They would add one more desperation shot with just over two minutes to play that went high, but that would be it as UH Hilo's defense tightened.
UH Hilo ended up with ten shots on the night, five on goal. Biola had six shots on the night, three saved by Cahill, who posted her fifth shutout of the season.
The Vulcans will be at home again on Saturday, taking on Hawai`i Pacific. Start time at Kamehameha School is 3 p.m.
