Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Late rush pushes Vulcans past Saints, 2-1

LACEY, Wash.—Someone once said that patience is a virtue, and UH Hilo women's soccer head coach Gene Okamura must have an infinite amount of it—or at least is developing it.

His Vulcan soccer team pulled out a 2-1 overtime victory on Tuesday afternoon over Saint Martin's at the SMU Soccer Complex, scoring in the 86th minute and the 95th to snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat.

Callye Lahmann's goal sent the match into overtime, and Jaimie Salas provided the game winner. The non-conference victory was the third straight for the Vulcans, improving their record to 4-1-2 on the year. The host Saints dropped to 4-6.

The Vulcans had completely dominated the match, but were still looking at a 1-0 loss with just five minutes remaining.

They had 15 shots in the first half alone, including eight on goal, while the Saints had just one shot on goal—but that shot found net when Jessica Moskowitz fired a ball over the top of UH Hilo keeper Bailey Cahill's head in the 24th minute, on one of the rare SMU penetrations into Vulcan territory in the first half.

At intermission, the Vulcans also had a 7-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities, but still trailed 1-0.

The same scenario unveiled in the second half, as UH Hilo continued to have great opportunities but couldn't convert. Salas had a one-on-opportunity in the 60th minute. Janelle Schwartz banged a shot off the top of the crossbar in the 64th.

Finally, with just 4:33 left in the match, Brende Yoshizumi fed a pass to Lahmann, whose shot bounced off the post, but came right back to her and she put it past SMU goalie Sara Christensen. That gave the Vulcans new life, and they carried that momentum into the overtime period.

Less than five minutes into extra play, Tiera Arakawa sent a corner kick into a pack of people where Salas was able to get her head on it and push the ball beyond Christensen from five yards out. The golden goal was Salas' second score of the season and it was Arakawa's third assist.

The Vulcans finished with 23 shots, 11 of them on goal. The Saints had nine shots, with just two on goal. UH Hilo had 11 corner kicks to SMU's one. Christensen had nine saves in a valiant effort for the home team.

Okamura's team will have a quick turnaround, traveling tonight to the bay area where they will take on Academy of Art (Thursday) and Holy Names (Saturday) in a pair of Pacific West Conference matches in San Francisco and Oakland.
