KEAAU, Hawai`i—Visiting Hawai`i Pacific scored two goals in the final nine minutes to slip past host Hawai`i Hilo 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Paiea Stadium.
The Sharks broke open a scoreless deadlock with a score at 80:50 and another at 89:08 to sweep the season series against the Vulcans (HPU won back in September in a non-conference match, 4-1). The Sharks improved to 5-7 on the year, 3-4 in PacWest play. The Vulcans dropped to 3-9 overall and to 2-5 in conference action.
Hawaii Pacific dominated the first half, but had nothing to show for it on the scoreboard. The Sharks had 10 shots, six of them that had to be saved by UHH keeper
Nick Williams. The Vulcans had just two shots, both of them saved by Max Austli.
HPU even had an open goal attempt from ten yards out that banged off the crossbar and out of play.
The second half was played more evenly through the first 20 minutes. Then, a momentum-changer registered in the 64
th minute.
On a play near the HPU end of the field, Williams came out to corral a Shark cross and collided with HPU's Christian Porras. Williams went down in a heap and had to exit the match. Porras was issued a yellow card.
Williams left without having given up a goal, and with seven saves.
The Sharks seemed to amp up the pressure after that. In the 81
st minute, Makana Srivongsana sent a cross from the right side of the field to the left side of box, gathered in by Jair Espinoza and flicked into the bottom left corner of the net past new keeper
Selvin Sandoval. Eight minutes later, HPU added insurance when Teppei Negami dribbled past a lunging Sandoval and pushed the ball into an empty net.
The Vulcans had one solid attempt in between those two goals, off a corner kick that
Alen Acosta headed into the hands of HPU keeper Austli.
The Sharks finished with 16 shots, nine of them on goal while the Vulcans had seven shots, five of them saved by Asutli, who was playing in just his fourth match of the season—earning his second shutout.
The Vulcans will play their final home match of the season on Tuesday evening, hosting Point Loma at 7:30 p.m. After the match, eight Vulcans players will be honored on Senior Night.
