Vulcans roll in three sets over Hawks

OAKLAND, Calif.--First goal on the checklist, done.

The UH Hilo volleyball team, playing their first of five matches on the road, took care of step number one with a 25-19, 25-13, 25-13 win over host Holy Names on Saturday afternoon at Tobin Gymnasium.

The victory improved the title-seeking Vulcans overall record to 14-5 and their Pacific West Conference mark to 10-3. It also gave UHH a season sweep of the Hawks (UHH won 3-0 on Oct. 20 in Hilo) and dropped Holy Names' record to 3-17 in 2018 and to 2-13 in conference play.

Ashton Jessee led the visitors with 11 kills, followed by Bria Beale's nine and Alexandria Parisian's seven in a match that took just one hour and ten minutes to finish. The first set was a battle, and after that the Vulcans got their offense cranked up and rolling.

UH Hilo took a 11-3 lead out of the gates in the first set, but the Hawks answered with five straight points and eventually tied the set at 16-16 and 17-17. But from there, the Vulcans scored eight of the final nine points to post the 25-19 set win. Kills by Jessee and Evelin Solyomvari finished off the the first game.

In the second set, the Vulcans left little doubt, running out to leads of 9-3 and 18-8 before settling for the 25-13 count. UHH would hit a rousing .500 in the set. In the third, it was more of the same with the Vulcans taking a 11-5 lead, although HNU battled back to 17-13. Again, UH Hilo got back on track by scoring the next eight points for the 25-13 win, hitting .400 in the process.

Armani Moultrie had six blocks to lead the Vulcans at the net, while Beale added three roofs and Jessee had two. Beale led the defense with 12 digs, while Basia Sauni had a double-double with 16 assists and 10 digs.

The Vulcans will have to reload quickly, taking on Academy of Art in San Francisco on Sunday afternoon at 3 pm (Pacific time).
