Vulcans block out the Sunbirds

FRESNO, Calif.—Hawai`i Hilo had a season-high 32 blocks to stuff out any chances of a Fresno Pacific upset on Tuesday night at the FPU Events Center.

The Vulcans won the battle at the net and on the scoreboard, 25-20, 25-18, 18-25, 25-15.

The win was UH Hilo's fourth straight and third of this five-match road trip. They improved to 16-5 on the season and to 12-3 in the Pacific West Conference. Fresno Pacific fell to 5-19 on the year and to 4-11 in the PacWest.

The victory allowed the Vulcans to move up into a third-place tie with Point Loma (12-3), and they are only one game back in the loss column of either Azusa Pacific or Biola--who play each other tonight (one of them will also have three losses after tonight, the other two).

The Vulcans have been one of the top blocking teams in the PacWest all season, but their 32 blocks by far eclipsed their previous season high of 20.

Ashton Jessee led the way with three solo blocks and ten block assists (13 total). Armani Moultrie had seven total blocks, while Alexandria Parisian and Evelin Solyomvari had six each.

Parisian also had 12 kills (.375 hitting percentage), as did Bria Beale. Beale also had nine digs, while Mina Grant led the Vulcans in that category with 13. Jessee had seven kills to go with her monster night at the net. Solyomvari had eight kills.

The Vulcans never trailed in the first set, scoring four of the final five points to take the 25-20 verdict. They hit .314 in the set. In the second set, UHH broke a 10-10 tie and began to pull away, eventually going up two sets to zero with a 25-18 win.

The Sunbirds battled back in the third set, jumping out to an 8-4 lead. The Vulcans closed back to 15-12 on an Jessee kill, but FPU pulled away again, pushing their lead out to 21-13. When the set was over (18-25), the Vulcans had just nine kills and hit only .088.

The visitors got back on track in the fourth set. They blew out to a 7-2 lead, thanks in part to two kills by Beale. The Sunbirds would rally back to trail just 8-6, but that would be as close as they would get as the Vulcans finished off the match at 25-15. They hit a match-high .346 in the set.

The Vulcans will continue this road swing with a Thursday match at Dominican (7 pm Pacific), and wrap it up on Friday at Notre Dame de Namur (also 7 pm). UH Hilo then returns home to take on Azusa Pacific on Oct. 31.
