Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Vulcans win fifth straight, top Hawks 3-1

HAYWARD, Calif.—Lucy Maino scored twice and so did the Hawai`i Hilo Vulcans in the second half to break a 1-1 tie on their way to a 3-1 soccer victory over Holy Names on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field on the campus of Cal State East Bay.

The road victory was UH Hilo's third on this trip and its fifth in a row. They improved to 6-1-2 on the season and to 3-0-1 on the Pacific West Conference, holding on to their second place spot in the standings. First place Point Loma defeated Azusa Pacific today (2-1) to improve to 6-0 in PacWest action.

Holy Names dropped to 2-7 with the loss and to 0-3 in the PacWest.

While Maino, a senior, had two of UH Hilo's three goals, it was a freshman that gave the Vulcans the go-ahead score.

Before that, the Vulcans got on the board first at 11:06 when Maino took a corner kick from Tiera Arakawa and headed it into the net. Arakawa kicked the ball from the left side of the field and Maino bounced it in from the right side. It was the second time this season for that combination to pay dividends off a corner kick. It was also Arakawa's four assist of the year.

But Holy Names answered in the 22nd minute on a goal from Jaclyn Arballo, and that 1-1 score held up through halftime. Both teams had three shots on goal at the break, while UH Hilo had eight shots overall, the Hawks had five.

In the second half, rookie Brende Yoshizumi broke a 1-1 tie with a score at 69:04, taking the assist from Leaighana Weaver. It was the second collegiate goal for the freshman from Kamehameha-Kapalama, and more importantly gave the Vulcans a huge lead, especially when you take into account that the Vulcan defense had begun to clamp down on the Hawks.

After intermission, UHH only allowed four Hawk shots and just one of those was on goal, helping to insure that a 2-1 lead would hold up. Nonetheless, the visitors added insurance in the 84th minute (83:03) when Maino scored unassisted. It was her third goal of the season and her first that did not come off a header.

UH Hilo's trio of goals was their highest offensive output of the season. They had 14 shots, six on goal, while holding the Hawks to nine shots, four on goal.

UH Hilo goalkeeper Bailey Cahill had three saves, and despite giving up a goal today, has only give up five total scores in nine matches this year.

The Vulcans will now return home for a four-game homestand, beginning with a Thursday (Oct. 11) match with Concordia. Start time at Kamehameha School in Keaau will be 7 p.m.
