Vulcans finish in second place with season finale victory

FRESNO, Calif.—Jaimie Salas and Hedda Bjerklund scored second half goals to help ensure that the 2018 Hawaii Hilo women's soccer season ended on a high note during a 2-1 win over host Fresno Pacific on Saturday night under the lights at Ramirez Field.

The Vulcans won their final three matches of the season to finish 10-4-2 overall and 7-3-1 in the Pacific West Conference. With the win, UH Hilo pulled into a tie with Concordia for second place in the final conference standings.

The overall mark is the best record for a UH Hilo team since the 2013 squad had the exact same ledger. The second place finish is the highest ever for the Vulcans in the PacWest.

Fresno Pacific finishes their year at 7-10-1 overall and 7-4 in the PacWest.

The Vulcans and Sunbirds played through a scoreless first half, although the visitors outshot their hosts, 10-5.

15 minutes after intermission, UH Hilo got on the board when Salas, playing in her final collegiate match, took a pass in a crowded box from fellow senior Carlie Reader and pushed it to the left past Sunbird keeper Alex Benevidez.

The Sunbirds rallied back in the 76th minute when Tori DeLeon tied things up at 1-1. Overtime looked to be on the horizon before Bjerklund deposited the game winner. Bjerklund scored just her second goal of the season by taking a pass from Danika Steele in the box and dribbled it into the goal.

FPU had one more good opportunity in the 85th minute, but Hannah Strong's shot was saved by Vulcan goalie Bailey Cahill. Cahill finished with three saves in the game.

UH Hilo applied pressure all night with 23 shots, nine of them on goal. Fresno Pacific had eight shots, four of them on goal.

UH Hilo will graduate 11 seniors off the 2018 squad, and return five starters for 2019.
