Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Chaminade holds off Navarette, Vulcans for 65-58 win

HONOLULU, Hawai`i—Host Chaminade countered every Hawai`i Hilo run with a counter blitz of their own to defeat the Vulcans in women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at McCabe Gym, 65-58.

The Silverswords overcame 27 points from the Vulcans' Allie Navarette to pick up their first Pacific West Conference win of the year (1-1) and to improve to 2-3 overall. UH Hilo is now 2-2 this season and 0-2 in PacWest play.

Navarette, the 6-0 sophomore post, had nine rebounds to go with her career-high 27 points. (26 was her previous best). The Silverswords countered with three players in double figures—Diamond Carter with 16, Destiny Castro with 13 and nine rebounds and Jordyn Zader's 12.

The game began as a tradeshow, with each squad exchanging hoops. The Vulcans led 10-8 early, but as it would turn out that would be their last advantage in the game. The Silverswords finished the quarter on a 10-4 run and wouldn't trail again.

But that's not to say the Vulcans wouldn't make a number of runs at their hosts. Navarette scored on three straight possessions in the third quarter to tie the contest (39-39), but Chaminade would answer with a 9-0 run to close the period, taking a 50-41 lead into the fourth.

Two separate Navarette baskets cut the margin to five points in the fourth, but that's as close as the Vulcans would get. One of those field goals cut the score to 58-53 with 1:53 remaining, but Chaminade hit their free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Navarette converted 10 of 22 shots from the field, and seven of nine shots from the free throw line. Freshman guard Mandi Kawaho was also in double figures for UHH with 11 points and five assists.

The Vulcans were cool from long range, hitting just 2-of-19 three-point attempts, and the Silverswords won the battle of the boards, 41-31.

UH Hilo has a short turnaround, returning home to host Fresno Pacific on Monday night. The game will start at 5 p.m. on campus at the UH Hilo Gymnasium.
