Vulcans shake off rust, take down Hawks 72-56

HILO, Hawai`i—All nine UH Hilo players in uniform reached the scoring column as the Vulcans led from nearly start to finish to take down Holy Names in women's basketball action at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium, 72-56.

The victory was the first Pacific West Conference win for the Vulcans (1-3) and they improved to 3-3 overall. The Hawks fell to 1-10 on the year and to 1-5 in the conference.

Allie Navarette had 21 points and a career-high 19 rebounds to lead the Vulcans. The sophomore post hit free throws and then a three-pointer in the opening moments of the game to give her team a lead that they would never give up.

Mandi Kawaha and Alyssa Movchan added 13 points each to bolster the Vulcan effort. Kawaha also had five assists, and Movchan hit three-of-four trey attempts, all in the first half.

UH Hilo, who hadn't played in two weeks, showed no sign of rust from the opening tap. They scored 12 points in the first 4:45 and hit three-of-five long bomb attempts to take a 19-13 lead at the end of the first period.

Amber Vaughn hit a three to open the second period (the Vulcans would hit nine on the night) and the home team would go on the take a 37-26 lead into the halftime locker room. Seven players were already in the scoring column in the first half and UHH shot 50 percent in the first 20 minutes.

UH Hilo opened the third period on an 8-2 run, and Navarette's second three-ball of the night at the third period buzzer gave the Vulcans a 58-37 lead heading into the final 10 minutes. UHH would lead by as many as 25 points with seven minutes left before settling for the final 72-56 count.

Taylor Krouse led the Hawks with 14 points and Onjalise Carley-Hilliard had 12. Jaliah Williams pulled down a season-high 17 rebounds for the visitors, and Gernijah Martin was also in double figures with 11 boards.

The Vulcans will get right back to work the next two nights, hosting Saint Martin's on Tuesday (4:30 pm) and Alaska Anchorage on Wednesday (5:30).
