Penguins race past Vulcans

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.—Hawai`i Hilo's Allie Navarette drilled a three-pointer 30 seconds into the Vulcans' match-up with host Dominican on Monday afternoon, but that 3-0 lead would be one of the only highlights on the day as the host Penguins cruised to a 94-46 win at the Conlan Center.

No. 6 regionally ranked Dominican improved to 8-2 on the season and to 5-1 in the Pacific West Conference. The Vulcans fell to 4-5 on the year and to 1-4 in the PacWest.

Dominican's Natalie Diaz, the 2018 PacWest Player of the Year who came into the game averaging 30.8 points a contest, led all scorers with 30 points.

The Vulcans were led by Alyssa Movchan's 14 points. The senior guard hit 4-of-8 three-pointers and had five rebounds. Navarette finished with nine points and eight boards.

Navarette's trey came on UH Hilo's first possession, after the 6-0 sophomore had blocked the first Penguin shot attempt of the game at the other end of the court. But Dominican found their groove after that, outscoring the Vulcans 12-0 over the next four minutes to take a lead that they would never relinquish.

The Penguins led 29-11 at the end of the first quarter and used a 7-0 run at the start of the second period to add to their lead. They would be ahead on the scoreboard 43-20 at the break, shooting 55 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes—paced by Diaz who had 17 points and missed only two shots in the first half.

Dominican lengthened their lead to 67-30 at the end of the third quarter, and then outscored their visitors 27-16 in the final stanza. The Vulcans shot just 27 percent from the field and were out-rebounded 51-32.

The Vulcans will play game two of this three-game trip to northern California on Wednesday at Fresno Pacific. Start time is 2:30 p.m. Pacific time.
