HILO, Hawai`i—It was a night of firsts for the Hawaii Hilo baseball team on Sunday night during a 3-0 victory over Saint Martin's at Wong Stadium.
Sophomore
Dylan Spain tossed a one-hit gem for seven innings, helping the Vulcans to their first victory of the season (1-4). It was Spain's first career shutout, and it was also the first career save for red-shirt freshman pitcher
John Kea.
Most importantly, it was the first victory of the year for the Vulcans.
Spain, the 6-foot-6 right-hander (Honolulu\St. Louis HS), gave up a first inning double to Bryant Nakagawa but settled in after that. He fanned six batters and did not walk anyone. After giving up the double, Spain retired 20 batters in a row.
"That's the kind of game that we all knew Dylan had him," said head coach Kal Miyataki. "He was hitting his spots tonight and his fast ball was touching the low 90's.
Kea, also from St. Louis HS, came into the contest in the ninth inning to get the save, striking out the final two batters of the game.
Deric Valoroso, Jr. pitched a perfect eighth inning in the set-up role.
It was the first game of a four-game series between the Vulcans and Saints. It was the first game of the year for St. Martins.
The Vulcans got all the runs that they would need in the second inning. After walks to
Dylan Sugimoto, Mano Manago, and a sacrifice bunt by
Micah Carter, shortstop
Edison Sakata laced a single to score them both. One play later, Sugimoto would score on a double play ball to make the count 3-0.
The Vulcans had seven hits on the night, but it was a night of slick defense. The Saints turned three double plays, and neither team had an error on the evening.
Sakata had two hits and the two RBI, the only player on either team with more than one hit.
The two teams will meet on Monday for a twinbill. The first game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
