HILO, Hawai`i--It took four hours to clinch a four-game sweep and secure a four-game winning streak for Hawai`i Hilo on Tuesday night at Wong Stadium.
The Vulcans rallied from a 9-3 deficit to take a 15-10 verdict over Saint Martin's in the final game of a four-game set. The win gives UH Hilo a .500 record at 4-4, and also secured their first series sweep of an opponent since 2013 (Academy of Art). It is also the Vulcans' first four-game win streak since ending the 2013 season with that sweep of the Urban Knights.
Tonight's game lasted four hours and 15 minutes, featuring 25 runs, 29 hits, and 12 different pitchers. The Vulcans, who trailed by six runs going into the bottom of the seventh, batted around in both the seventh and eighth innings to score a total of 12 runs---six in each inning.
When it was all said and done, UH Hilo's
Cole Nakachi picked up the win in relief, giving up just one hit in two innings of work. He struck out three batters.
Before that, there was a lot of hitting and a dozen pitching changes.
After the Saints scored four runs in the top of the seventh, it appeared like the visitors from Washington would escape the Big Island with a win before heading to Oahu for a series with Hawaii Pacific. But the Vulcans rallied for six runs of their own after the seventh inning stretch. The inning featured two singles by
Edison Sakata, a two-run double by
Chris Aubort and a two-run single off the bat of
Adrian Poot.
The Saints added a run in the top of the eighth to take a 10-9 lead, but UH Hilo answered with insurance galore. Five hits and a pair of SMU errors led to six more runs.
Mana Manago drove home two of those runs with a single in the middle of the rally.
That left matters to Nakachi, who allowed one single in the ninth but also induced a ground out, fly out and strikeout.
The Vulcans had 15 total hits in the game, three each by Aubort and
Phillip Steering. Both also drove in two runs and had a double. Poot had three RBI and two hits.
RJ Romo and Sakata added two hits apiece. Defensively,
Drew Ichikawa joined Nakachi in an effective relief role, pitching 1.2 innings without giving up a hit in the middle of the game.
The Saints had 14 hits in the contest, three each by Steven Sordahl and Colton Peha.
Next action for UH Hilo will be an exhibition match-up with the Alumni on February 24. The Vulcans will then host Biola in their Pacific West Conference opener, a four-game series that begins on March 1.
