RIVERSIDE, Calif.—One quick way to a lot of points and a sure victory is of course, is the three-pointer.
On Tuesday night at the Special Events Center, host California Baptist used that method 17 times on their way to a 104-59 win over visiting Hawai`i Hilo.
The Lancers improved to 10-6 and stayed in the hunt in a very tight race for Pacific West Conference tournament, currently tied for fourth. They are now 13-11 overall. UH Hilo dropped to 6-13 on the year and to 4-12 in conference play.
The Lancers drained 17-of-29 long bomb attempts, a sizzling conversion rate of 59 percent. While CBU may not have needed all of those treys tonight, the defending PWC champs certainly needed the win to stay alive in the hunt for a tournament berth, which is being held in their own building.
As has been the case often late in the season, the Vulcans traded scores early, but didn't have the depth to stay at that pace.
After a Kalani Jones basket gave UH Hilo a 5-4 lead halfway through the first quarter, Cal Baptist answered with a 14-5 run to close the period and take a 18-10 lead. They would lengthen that to 45-24 at halftime, and the Lancers would continue to pour in shots from there.
Ane Olaeta led the Lancers with 26 points, hitting five-of-six three-point attempts. She also had nine assists. Olaeta and her teammates out-boarded the Vulcans, 51-26.
Allie Navarette led UHH with 13 points, and she also had five rebounds.
Sara Shimizu was also in double figures with 11 points, as was
Patience Taylor and
Danielle Dacosta with 10 each.
Malia Lee led UH Hilo with seven rebounds.
The Vulcans continue their grueling southern California road trip with a Thursday night match-up at No. 4 regionally ranked Azusa Pacific on Thursday night.
