SAN DIEGO, Calif.—After five games in eight days on the road, playing each of the top teams in the conference tough for at least half of the game, the Hawai`i Hilo Vulcans finally ran out of gas during a 104-53 loss to Point Loma on Saturday afternoon at Golden Gymnasium.
The Vulcans will limp home with a 5-13 mark in the Pacific West Conference and they are 6-19 overall. The playoff contending Sea Lions are now 21-7 on the year and 15-4 in the PacWest. PLNU is tied for third in conference play and ranked sixth in the first official NCAA West Region poll.
UH Hilo will now return home for their final two games of the season, hosting Chaminade on Thursday and Hawai`i Pacific on Saturday.
The Vulcans broke out to a 7-4 lead early in the first quarter, but that would turn out to be the highlight of the afternoon. The Sea Lions answered with an 18-5 run and continued to roll from there. They led by 15 points at intermission (41-26), and then went on a 9-2 blitz to start the second half to put the game out of reach quickly.
Devin Johnson led UHH with 19 points and nine rebounds.
Randan Berinobis was also in double figures with ten points. But the Vulcans shot just 33 percent from the field, and PLNU doubled that with a sizzling 66 percent.
Preston Beverly led six Sea Lions in double figures with 20 points. Point Loma hit 11-of-20 treys and out-boarded UHH, 41-23.
