Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Second half free throws, defense, propels Vulcans past Chaminade

HILO, Hawai—Host Hawai`i Hilo put the clamps on visiting Chaminade in the third quarter, parlaying that stop into a 68-46 Pacific West Conference women's basketball victory on Thursday night at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

After trailing 29-28 at halftime, the Vulcans held Chaminade to just four third quarter points and only 17 second half digits on their way to the win. They also buried a season-best 19 of 21 free throws. That allowed UH Hilo to snap a 10-game losing streak and avenge an earlier loss this season in Honolulu to the Silverswords (69-66).

The Vulcans improved to 5-14 in the PacWest with the win and to 7-15 overall. Chaminade is now 2-19 on the year and 2-17 in conference play. Allie Navarette led UHH with double-double numbers of 23 points and 15 rebounds. Destiny Castro led Chaminade with 21 points, 17 of those in the first half.

The Vulcans busted out to 6-0 and 10-3 leads in the first quarter on baskets by Navarette. But the Silverswords pulled back to within four points (16-12) at the end of the quarter. In fact, from the end of the first period through the first four minutes of the second, Chaminade went on a 10-0 run, with Castro scoring the first three baskets after the short break.

The teams would then trade leads the rest of the quarter, with the Silverswords taking a 29-28 margin into the halftime locker room, thanks to a pair of Castro free throws with five seconds left. Castro would have 17 points at halftime, Navarette 12.

In the third quarter, Castro and the Silverswords suddenly went stone cold. They didn't score for the first 8:42 of the period, allowing the Vulcans to go on a 10-0 run. A Patience Taylor basket right before the end of the ten minutes gave UHH a 40-33 lead heading into the final stanza, as the visitors scored just four points during the period.

UH Hilo outscored the Silverswords in the fourth period, 28-13.

Navarette, just a freshman, hit 9-of-13 shots from the field and also had five assists on the night. Alyssa Movchan had a career-high 15 points and five assists, Safia Sheikh added 12 points and seven rebounds and Taylor chipped in eight points.

The Vulcans will wrap up the 2017-18 season on Saturday night against PacWest leading Hawai`i Pacific. Start time at the Civic Auditorium is 5 p.m. Senior Sheikh and Kailani Jones will be honored after the game on Senior Night.
