LAS VEGAS, Nev.--Saint Martin's scored twice in the top of the seventh to slip by unbeaten Hawai`i Hilo 2-1 in the final game of the Desert Stinger on Sunday afternoon at Majestic Park.
The Vulcans finished the tournament at 4-1. They had run differential of +29, best in the Desert Stinger. They will remain in Las Vegas to play Montana State Billings in a doubleheader on Tuesday before traveling to the Easton Dixie State Classic on Thursday in St. George, Utah.
Bailey Gaspar hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie, her third home run of the day. But the Saints, picked to finish third in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, slapped out four hits and pushed across two runs to take the lead. The Vulcans then went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh.
Billi Derleth took the hard-luck loss, tossing all seven innings. She gave up 10 hits, the two runs, struck out two and did not walk a batter. Kim Nelson went the distance for the Saints, allowing just four hits, two of them by Gaspar. It was the first win of the year for Saint Martin's (1-4).
Gaspar was named to the Desert Stinger All-Tournament team, hitting .471 with three home runs and seven RBI. She had 11 chances in the field at third base without an error.
