ST. GEORGE, Utah--Isabelle Mejia hit a grand slam and her Hawaii Hilo Vulcans pounded out 11 hits in a five-inning, 11-3 win over Fort Lewis (Colo.) at the Dixie State Easton Classic at the Canyon Softball Complex.
Mejia, a junior outfielder\pitcher, hit her fifth home of the season during a six-run fourth inning that sealed the victory for UH Hilo, who improved to 8-3 with the victory. Fort Lewis, who had defeated Dominican of the PacWest earlier in the day, dropped to 1-7.
The Vulcans leave the tournament with a 3-1 classic record. Five times in their 11 games this year, they have reached double figures on offense.
Mejia led a hit parade that included four players with two hits each--herself,
Kiarra Lincoln,
Brinell Kaleikini and Markie Okamura. Okamura and
Bailey Gaspar drove in two runs each.Â
Cyanne Fernandez did her part in the pitcher's circle, picking up her sixth win of the year (6-0). She gave up six hits in five innings of work and three earned runs. She fanned a season-high nine batters, averaging nearly two per inning.
The Vulcans trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the third before their bats got going. Gaspar had an RBI-double and Kaleikini popped a run-scoring single to move UHH into a 5-2 lead. Mejia's grand slam in the fourth, along with Okamoto's RBI-double put a wrap on things.
The Vulcans now return home for classes and practice, and will then head to Honolulu for a Thursday non-conference doubleheader against Chaminade. On Friday on Oahu, they play Great Northwest Athletic Conference favorite Central Washington in a twinbill. Both doubleheaders are at McKinley High School and will begin at 10 a.m.
