Lancers win game one of series, 10-2

HILO, Hawai`i—Visiting California Baptist put together two big innings on Thursday night at Wong Stadium, which was more than enough support with the pitching of Justin Montgomery to cruise to a 10-2 victory over Hawai`i Hilo in the first game of a four-game baseball slate.

The Lancers improved to 7-2 in the Pacific West Conference and to 14-5 overall, while the Vulcans dropped to 7-10 on the year and to 3-6 in conference play.

California Baptist, ranked No. 2 in the unofficial west region poll, scored three times in the first inning and four times to in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead early, allowing Montgomery to do the rest. The 6-foot-4 right-hander pitched the first seven innings and didn't allow an earned run. He gave up four hits, walked three and fanned seven to pick up his first win of the season (1-1). He had a no-hitter through three innings.

The Lancers got on the board in the first inning three times, although only one of the runs was earned against starter Dylan Spain. In the fourth, they scored four more times on four hits and a Vulcan error. In the eighth, Angelo Capolupo drove in two more runs with a base hit, and Andrew Bash launched a shot deep over the left field fence in the ninth.

The Vulcans scored an unearned run in the sixth inning, and a earned run in the eighth. In the eighth, Jonathan Segovia led off with a walk and Dylan Sugimoto brought him home with a deep double to right centerfield.

Phillip Steering had two of UH Hilo's five hits, ripping a double that one-hopped the right field fence, and roped a single up the middle. Bash, who came into the game hitting .489, went 3-for-4 and hit his fifth homer of the season. The Lancers had 11 hits in the game.

The two teams will square off again on Friday night, 6 p.m. at Wong Stadium.
