TURLOCK, Calif.--The Hawai`i Hilo softball team laced 11 hits and senior pitcher
Cyanne Fernandez picked up her 13th victory of the season as the Vulcans bounced back with a 6-1 win over Northwest Nazarene on Friday afternoon at the Tournament of Champions.
Coupled with a 4-2 loss to Western Washington earlier in the day, the Vulcans are now 16-9 on the season, while NNU falls to 12-15. The Vulcans will continue tournament play on Saturday with a 4:30 pm game versus Cal State East Bay, and a 7 pm game against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Fernandez improved to 13-3 on the season as she shut down the Nighthawks. The righthander allowed six hits in seven innings of work, gave up one earned run, walked two and struck out one. She gave up the one run in the first inning on a pair of singles and a stolen base, but settled in after that. She didn't allow a runner past second base until the seventh inning, when Northwest Nazarene put together a rally with two outs, singling twice and using a walk to load the bases, but Fernandez got the final out of the game on a ground ball to snuff out the threat.
The Vulcans trailed 1-0 until tying the game in the fourth inning when
Brinell Kaleikini singled and came home on
Markie Okamoto's base hit. UHH, playing as the home team, took the lead for good in the fifth when
Mari Kawano singled and scored on
Bailey Gaspar's RBI base hit to left.
UH Hilo added insurance and then some in the sixth.
Isabelle Mejia doubled to lead off the inning and Okamoto brought her home with a single to right.
Darian Obara later brought home a run with a bunt single, and Kawano chased two runners across the plate with a single to center field.
Kawano and Okamoto both had two hits and two RBI in the game. Nine different players recorded hits in the game for UH Hilo, who had a total of 11.
