TURLOCK, Calif.—Cal State San Bernardino's Amanda Ramirez threw a four-hit shutout and Jessica Brown hit her 11
th home run of the year as the Coyotes shut down Hawai`i Hilo, 6-0, on Sunday morning at the Tournament of Champions.
There would be no comeback today for the Vulcans, who rallied twice on Saturday night for a 6-5 win over Cal State East Bay. UH Hilo is now 2-2 at the tournament and 17-10 on the season. CSUSB is also 17-10 on the year and 3-1 at the event hosted by Stanislaus State.
Ramirez kept the Vulcans off balance all day, improving to 10-6 on the season. She allowed just four hits, didn't walk a batter and fanned four. She received all the offense that she would need during a four-run third inning, which included Brown's two-run homer.
The Vulcans touched Ramirez for four hits—a double by
Isabelle Mejia in the second inning, a single by
Maria Steadmon in the fifth, a single by
Bailey Gaspar in the sixth, and a pinch-hit double by
Lauren Flores in the seventh.
Mejia took the loss in the pitcher's circle.
Leah Gonzales spelled her in the fourth inning and pitched effectively, going four innings and allowing only two hits, no walks, and no runs.
The Vulcans will wrap up play at the Tournament of Champions at 4:30 pm today with a match-up against Cal State Monterey Bay, the pre-season CCAA favorite.
