Vulcans take two more from Hawks

HAYWARD, Calif.—One day after surviving two close games with wins against Holy Names, the Hawai`i Hilo softball team provided less drama with 8-3 and 10-0 victories over the Hawks on Wednesday to sweep the four-game series.

The Vulcans won their fourth and fifth straight games, improving to 22-10 on the season and to 10-4 in the Pacific West Conference. Holy Names dropped to 1-23 on the year and to 1-11 in the PacWest.

Bailey Gaspar hit a double and a home run in the first game, and freshman Megan Berrelleza pitched a two-hit shutout in just her second college start in the nightcap.

Berrelleza, who pitched a perfect 1.1 innings of relief last weekend and got the win against Cal State East Bay, made her first college start today. She gave up a single in the first inning, a double in the fifth, and worked around three walks to get the mercy-rule five inning win.

She didn't strike out a batter, but let her defense do the work behind her in improving to 2-0 on the year.

Earlier, she had plenty of run support to feel comfortable. The Vulcans scored three runs in the first after Kiarra Lincoln and Mari Kawano doubled to lead off the game. Markie Okamoto had an RBI single later in the inning.

The Vulcans then exploded for six runs in the third, on the strength of only three hits. Maria Steadmon had an RBI-single, and Isabelle Mejia drove in two with a base hit. Two errors, two walks and a hit batter helped account for the other scores.

UH Hilo added one more run in the fifth, padding which as it turned out Berrelleza didn't need to finish the game via mercy rule (eight runs or more after five innings).

The visitors had ten hits in the game, two each by Mejia and Kawano.

In the first game, Gaspar hit her tenth home run of the year in the first inning and she added an RBI-double in the fifth. Her round tripper helped jump start a six-run first inning that also included a three-run double by Darian Obara.

The Vulcans scored a run in the fourth inning via four walks. For the game, the Hawks issued eight free passes.

Skyler Thomas had two hits in the contest for UHH, and Cyanne Fernandez picked up her 14th win of the season in the pitcher's circle, tossing a complete game. She survived nine hits, gave up two earned runs, had one walk and six strikeouts.

UH Hilo will wrap up this long road trip with a doubleheader at Dominican on Friday. Start time will be noon Pacific.
