OAKLAND, Calif.--Academy of Art's Alex Fernandez pitched a complete game and the Urban Knight's Angel Mora hit a home run to help the hosts win game one of the four--game series versus visiting Hawai`i Hilo on Friday night at Laney College.
Fernandez did not give up an earned run in nine innings of work to help AAU even their overall record at 19-19 and their Pacific West Conference record to 14-15. The Vulcans fall to 14-21 on the year and to 10-17 in the PacWest.
Fernandez and UH Hilo's Spain were locked up in a pitcher's card through four innings, both posting zeros in the book. The Vulcans scored in the fifth when Mano Manago singled and later came home on
Edison Sakata's base hit. The Urban Knights answered in the bottom half after two outs were already in the books. With a runner on, Mora hit a two-run homer. Jackson Murphy followed by with an RBI-hit, as did Evan Ray to make it 4-1.
Academy of Art added the dagger in the bottom of the sixth with three more runs, getting help from the Vulcans. Three hit batters, a balk and two singles put a crooked number in the scoresheet, giving the home team a 6-1 lead.
UH Hilo added two runs in the ninth, with
Jaryn Kanbara's double the biggest blow, but it wasn't enough as the Urban Knights claimed the 6-3 final.
Kanbara went 2-for-4 with a double and Sakata also had two hits. Spain went five innings, giving up three runs on five hits and took the loss.
Kekai Mahiko made just his fifth appearance of the year in relief, pitching two perfect innings and fanning two.
The two squads will square off on Sunday in a doubleheader that will start at noon.Â
