Sharks sixth enough to slip past Vulcans

WAIPAHU, Hawai`i--Host Hawai`i Pacific broke up a pitcher's dual with a four-run sixth inning to push past Hawai`i Hilo 5-2 on a Saturday night under the lights at Hans L Orange Park.

The two squads will wrap up their 2018 seasons on Sunday with a noon doubleheader. The first game will be a Pacific West Conference game, the second (seven innings) will be a non-conference bout.

Hawai`i Pacific improved to 21-27 with the win and they are now 15-25 in the PacWest. The Vulcans fell to 20-26 on the year and to 16-21 in conference play.

Dylan Spain (UHH) and Joshua Muneno (HPU) picked up where they left off last weekend in Hilo, throwing blanks through the first four innings. Last weekend, Muneno tossed a nine-inning shutout against the Vulcans, while Spain also threw a complete game to get a win for UH Hilo.

This time, the Vulcans reached Muneno first, scoring twice in the fifth inning on a pair of hits and a wild pitch. Mano Manago singled and later scored on Dylan Sugimoto's double. Kilo Zuttermeister, who had walked, trotted home on a wild pitch to give the Vulcans a 2-0 lead.

Heading into the bottom of the sixth, Spain had only given up a handful of hits but the wheels would soon came off. The Sharks laced four hits, assisted by a pair of Vulcan errors, and four would cross the plate to give HPU a lead that Muneno would hold. Spain came out and the Sharks added another run in the seventh to make it 5-2.

The Vulcans had two runners on base in the eighth inning and one more in the ninth, but couldn't get them home as the Sharks held on for the triumph.

Muneno improved to 4-2, giving up eight hits and two earned runs. He walked one and fanned two. Spain allowed only one run in six innings of work (seven hits) but took the loss to fall to 4-7. Phillip Steering went 2-for-4 for UHH, while Sugimoto had a pair of hits in three at-bats.
