Hurricane Lane finally wins, VB tournament cancelled

HILO, Hawai`i--Due to severe flooding in Hilo and the surrounding areas, the remainder of the First Hawaiian Bank Volleyball Challenge has been cancelled.

Half the schedule went into the books before Hurricane Lane won out. All seven teams in the tournament played two matches each before the tournament was called.

Hilo has been receiving between 1-3 inches of rain per hour for over 24 hours. Many roads in the town are currently closed because of flooding. In all, the storm has brought over 31 inches of rain to the Big Island.

For the Vulcans, they began the 2018 season with a 3-0 win over St. Martin's and 3-2 loss to UC San Diego. They will travel to San Francisco next week (Aug. 31-Sept. 1) for the D2 West Region Crossover tournament. They will open play against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday at 10:45 a.m. at San Francisco State.
