SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.—Saturday sweeps ruled the day on September 1 for the University of Hawai`i Hilo volleyball team at the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase.
The Vulcans finished tournament play with their second three-set sweep of the day, dismantling Montana State Billings 25-17, 25-13, 25-15. Earlier, they took out San Francisco State, a squad that entered the day with a 4-1 record. MSUB came into the first day of the month with a 6-0 mark, before losing twice on Saturday.
UH Hilo finished the tournament with a 3-1 record and a 4-2 overall mark. At worst, they will tie for the best record in this pod of the showcase.
More importantly, the Vulcans looked dominant in two matches today against a pair of teams that came into Saturday with a combined 10-1 record.
On Saturday afternoon, they made it look easy against a Yellowjackets team that came in red hot. In the first set, they scored four straight points to take a 12-7 lead that they would never lose.
Bria Beale put down kills for the 22
nd, 23
rd and 24
th points of the match to help clinch a 25-17 set. Beale and
Alexandria Parisian each had four kills in the set as the Vulcans hit .345.
The Vulcans led from start to finish in the second set (25-13), and after breaking a 6-6 tie in the third set they would never trail on their way to the clean 25-15 win.
Parisian led the Vulcans with 10 kills, hitting .529. Beale finished with nine kills, 13 digs and two service aces in another complete match from the sophomore transfer.
Basia Sauni had 17 assists and 11 digs, while senior middle
Kiley Davis was credited with seven block assists. Overall, the team had 18 blocks on the day.
"We played well today against two good teams," head coach
Gene Krieger said. "I was especially pleased that we came back strong after a tough loss last night (to St. Martin's). It gives us some momentum coming into conference play next week, and at the same time we have plenty to work on."
The Vulcans return home to host Dominican next Friday and Notre Dame de Namur on Monday (Sept. 10) to open Pacific West Conference play.
