Falcons add to celebration with 5-0 win

SEATTLE, Wash.—On Saturday night at Interbay Stadium in Seattle, a halftime presentation was planned to celebrate 50 years of Seattle Pacific soccer, one of the most storied programs in NCAA Division II history.

For Falcon fans, the celebration began way before halftime.

Seattle Pacific scored five times in the first half, including twice in the first three minutes, to set the tone for a celebratory evening on their way to 5-0 non-conference win over Hawai`i Hilo.

The loss wrapped up an upside down trip for the Vulcans and new head coach Paul Regrutto. Regrutto's team began the three-match journey with a stunning 1-0 upset of nationally ranked Western Washington, but then fell to St. Martin's (4-1) and to the Falcons tonight.

SPU's Aiden Massey had a hat trick before intermission, including two goals in the first three minutes. He found the net just 1:32 into the match on a sliding kick, at 2:55 on an 18-yard shot from the top of the box and again at 42:19, this time taking a loose ball off a deflection firing it past Vulcan keeper Nick Williams.

They were the first three goals of the season and the college career for the freshman Massey.

Mario Vukic (15:01) and Alex Mejia (39:08) also had scores in the first half. The Falcons outshot UH Hilo 18-1 in the first 45 minutes of play. Titus Grant had two assists for the home team.

The second half was played more evenly, but the damage had already been done. The Falcons finished with a 23-4 shot edge, including 11-0 in shots on goal. SPU had six corner kicks to UH Hilo's two.

Seattle Pacific evened up their overall record on the year to 3-3, while the Vulcans will return home at 1-2. UH Hilo will fly back to Hilo on Sunday, get a few practices under their belts before traveling to Oahu to face Hawaii Pacific on Thursday and Chaminade on Saturday.
