LA MIRADA, Calif.--For
Alexandria Parisian and the UH HIlo Vulcan volleyball team, the fourth time was a charm.
On UH Hilo's fourth match point of the night, Parisian put the ball down to the Biola side of the floor, ending a wild match that went into overtime for a 25-20, 12-25, 25-17, 19-25, 18-16 Vulcan win in front of 410 loud fans at Chase Gymnasium. The victory moved UH Hilo into sole possession of second place in the Pacific West Conference with a 4-1 mark, and an 8-3 overall record. The Eagles saw its three-match win streak end, falling to 4-2 in the PacWest and 8-5 on the year.
Parisian's final lefty swing of the night gave her a team-high 15 kills, accomplished with a .364 hitting percentage. The freshman, who also put down UH Hilo's 17th point of the fifth set, notched a collegiate career high with the total.
But there is much more to the story of a match that lasted two hours and 15 minutes.
The Vulcans won the first set (25-20) after breaking a 17-17 tie with six straight points.
Bria Beale finished off the first game with a kill, but the second set belonged completely to the Eagles who broke out to an 8-1 lead and never trailed on their way to a 25-12 win.
In the third set, the Vulcans held a scant 13-11 lead before rattling off six straight points--courtesy of three kills from
Evelin Solyomvari, two from
Ashton Jessee and another from Beale to take a 19-11 margin. They would go on to take a 2-1 set lead with the 25-17 win. The fourth set swung back to Biola, with the Eagles breaking a 9-9 deadlock with four straight points. They would never trail in the set after that (25-19).
The winner-take-all fifth set had seven nerve-wracking ties through a 9-9 count. The Eagles then took 11-9 and 13-11 leads, to seemingly be in the driver's seat of the match. But the Vulcans roared back behind kills from Beale and Solyomvari (13-13), and then suddenly they had match point after a Biola net violation. But three times, the home team fought off match points, with the third time coming at 16-16. But Parisian ended the night with back-to-back kills to send the Vulcan bench streaming to the court in celebration.
Parisian wasn't the only Vulcan to have a big night. Beale had 14 kills, 12 digs and three block assists, and Solyomvari had 14 kills as well. Jessee had nine kills and a .444 attack percentage, while
Mina Grant led all Vulcans with 19 digs. Setter
Basia Sauni had a double-double with 29 assists and 16 digs, and also added two service aces.
With back-to-back big road wins under their belts, UH Hilo will head further south to try and end the southern California road trip on a even more positive note, with a Saturday match-up in San Diego against Point Loma.
