HILO, Hawai`i—Meeting for the second time in a week, the sequel was nothing like the original.
Chaminade's Jamin Fonseca's volley kick just 43 seconds into the first overtime period ended a deadlocked match, giving the visiting Silverswords a 1-0 victory over Hawai`i Hilo in non-conference men's soccer action on Saturday at Paiea Stadium.
Just one Saturday ago in Honolulu, Chaminade outscored the Vulcans 4-2 in a shootout in the Pacific West Conference contest between the two teams. Today's match was a completely opposite, a defensive standoff in a match that won't count in the conference standings.
Fonseca's near bicycle kick off a nifty pass from Noah Mokulehua sailed over the head of Vulcan goalkeeper
Nick Williams from close range, ruining UH Hilo's clean defensive stat sheet. It was a tough ending for the hosts, who had spent most of the match on the Silversword end of the field but without a goal to show for it.
Williams finished with four saves, as the Silverswords had nine shots, five of them on goal. The Vulcans had eight shots, two of them on goal that were saved by Chaminade keeper Michael Stafford. To emphasis the field possession point, the Vulcans had 12 corner kicks to Chaminade's two.
The Vulcans had a handful of solid opportunities in the second half, perhaps the best coming in the 75th minute when
Bradley Doyle fired a shot off the left post that just missed the corner of the goal by inches.
"We are closer," said UH Hilo head coach
Paul Regrutto. "We made adjustments and were much better this week than last week."
The Vulcans are now 1-6 on the year, while Chaminade improves to 2-2.
The Vulcans will now hit the road, traveling to the bay area for matches against Academy of Art (Oct. 4) and Holy Names (Oct. 6) next week.
