Larry Bush had 20 points, including ten in the final four and a half minutes of the game, to help visiting Hawai`i Hilo pull off a 66-56 men's basketball win over Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday afternoon.
James Griffin added 16 points and
Kupaa Harrison had 12 as the Vulcans moved back to .500 at 8-8 overall and 6-6 in the Pacific West Conference. Notre Dame de Namur remains winless on the season at 0-19 overall and 0-13 in the PacWest.
Stephen Baity hit 4-of-5 three-pointers to lead the Argonauts with 18 points.
Neither team led by more than five points in the first half as the host Argo's took a 29-28 lead into the halftime locker room.
The score was tied a 40-40 with 12:40 remaining when the Vulcans made the big breakaway in the game. UH Hilo went on a 9-0 run, fueled by two baskets from Harrison and a trey and basket from Griffin. That gave them a 49-40 lead, and Bush saw to it that they would never trail again.
Bush scored on three consecutive possessions with 4:30 left, giving UHH a 59-50 lead. Baity did his best to keep the home team in it, hitting a pair of three-pointers in that same stretch, but the Argonauts could get no closer five points the rest of the way.
Bush drained two free throw attempts each at 28 and 17 seconds to clinch the win.
The Vulcans shot 54 percent from the field, which helped them overcome nine treys from NDNU (9-for-18).
The Vulcans now return home for a four-game homestand, beginning with a Friday (Feb. 1) match-up with Azusa Pacific at 7:30 pm.
