BELMONT, Calif.—Sophomore sharpshooter
Sara Shimizu buried five three-pointers, including the final six points of the game as Hawai`i Hilo edged host Notre Dame de Namur, 49-47 on Saturday afternoon in Belmont.
Shimizu finished with a career-high 17 points, nailing five-of-eight shots from behind the arch. It allowed the Vulcans to snap an eight-game losing streak and pick up their first road victory of the season. The Vulcans improved to 5-11 overall and to 2-10 in the Pacific West Conference.
The Argonauts are now 4-13 on the year and 3-10 in the PacWest.
The game couldn't have been much closer throughout. There were seven ties and 14 lead changes.
Shimizu and
Alyssa Movchan hit treys in the first quarter to help the Vulcans draw even with their hosts in the first quarter (10-10). Shimizu had another trey in the second quarter to give the Vulcans a 21-17 lead, but the Argo's would rally back to take a 25-23 margin at the break.
In the third quarter, NDNU put together their largest lead of the game (37-30), but the Vulcans answered with a 9-2 run.
Maddie Beck's basket with two seconds left in the period tied the game at 39-39 heading into the final stanza.
The Argonauts scored the first five points of a low scoring fourth quarter, but they would have trouble finding the basket after that.
Patience Taylor's basket with 5:24 left made it a two-point game (45-43), and Shimizu added yet another long bomb with 4:30 remaining to give the Vulcans the lead at 46-45.
NDNU would regain the edge (47-46), but Shimizu again went downtown to grab the Vulcan margin back at 49-47 with 1:52 left. As it turned out, that would be all the scoring for the rest of the game. The Argonauts would miss on their next two possessions, but the Vulcans also missed free throws and turned the ball over, setting up one final NDNU opportunity.
The hosts missed two shots in the final seconds of the game and the Vulcans held on for the win.
Allie Navarette had 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots to help the Vulcan cause. Taylor had a near double-double with eight points and nine rebounds.
Jenise McKnight and Abigaail Walsh led the Argonauts with nine points each.
The Vulcans now return home for a four-game homestand, beginning with a Friday (Feb. 1) match-up with conference leader Azusa Pacific at 5 pm.
