SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.—Cold shooting in the first and third quarters was enough to place the UH Hilo women's basketball team on the short end of the scoreboard at historic Kezar Pavilion against Academy of Art on Friday night, 64-52.
The frigid spells allowed AAU to pick up their first Pacific West Conference victory of the season (1-6) and they moved to 2-8 overall. The Vulcans are also 1-6 in conference play and are now 4-7 on the year.
Allie Navarette had 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Vulcans, recording her fifth double-double of the year.
Sara Shimizu was in double figures with 10 points, and
Alyssa Movchan contributed eight points and six assists.
But the Vulcans shot just 34 percent from the field, 26 percent from three-point range (5-for-19) and were 11-of-18 from the free throw line (61 percent). That includes 28 percent shooting from the floor in the second half, two of ten from beyond the arch.
UHH scored just ten points in the first quarter and eight in the third.
Academy of Art hit a trio of treys in the first quarter to help stake the hosts to a 18-10 lead, but the Vulcans rallied back in the second quarter. Three-pointers by Movchan and
Mandi Kawaha got the visitors off to a good start and eventually a conventional three-point play by Shimizu tied the game at 28-28.
Free throws by Navarette with 24 seconds left gave the Vulcans a 30-28 lead at intermission, as the Vulcans outscored the Urban Knights 20-10 in the second period.
The two teams traded baskets early in the third quarter and UH Hilo had a 35-32 lead after back-to-back baskets by Navarette. But Academy of Art then caught fire, racing out on a 10-0 run that would ultimately give them the lead for good. They would close to period on a 15-3 blitz, taking a 47-38 margin into the final period.
The Vulcans wouldn't get any closer than seven points in the fourth quarter before the final score of 64-52 registered on the scoreboard.
Lily Perkins led the Urban Knights with 20 points and was assisted by Brianna Cates' 15 points.
The Vulcans dropped all three games on their calendar-opening three-game road trip, and now return home to tip off a three-game homestand with a Saturday (Jan. 12) contest versus Hawai`i Pacific. Start time will be 1 p.m. at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
