Vulcans, Penguins battle to 0-0 draw

HILO, Hawai`i—The outcome was very familiar for visiting Dominican, and is becoming something host UH Hilo has seen before as well.

The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie (double overtime) after 110 minutes of play. It was the fifth time this season that Domincan's match has ended with that verdict, and the third time for the Vulcans.

UH Hilo is now 2-4-3 on the season and 1-1-1 in PacWest play, while Dominican moves to 3-3-5 on the year and to 0-2-2 in conference action.

UH Hilo had the edge in shots with 18 (six on goal), compared to ten for Dominican (three on goal). UHH's Bailey Cahill had three saves and Dominican's Alyssa Ramos had six.

The first half was pretty evenly played, with Dominican sending six shots and UH Hilo five. The Penguins had one dangerous effort on a shot Tanya Bills that was saved by Cahill, and the Vulcans had a pair.

The first was a rocket fired by Christina Kanellou that bounced off the lower left bar, and the second came when Crystal Sanchez battled Dominican keeper Ramos for the ball from about 30 yards out, but couldn't get the ball all the way to the goal.

Four minutes into the second half, the Vulcans were close again. Nanea Wall sent a shot that was blocked in front of the goal by Ramos. Kanellou got the rebound and lofted it over Ramos, but a Dominican defender was able to head the ball away.

A little past the halfway point of the half, UHH had two more dangerous shots (Kanellou) and Dominican had one of their own (Aiden Marquez). But the scoreboard still showed zeros at the end of 90 minutes, sending the match into overtime.

In the first overtime, both squads had one shot sail high, but neither had anything that had to be saved. Nothing materialized for either squad in the second overtime either.

The Vulcans will wrap up this three-match home stand on Saturday with a 4:30 pm match against Fresno Pacific.
