WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Hilo's Kaelyn Uchida is the first day leader of the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate after Monday's 18 holes.
The sophomore from Waiakea High School (Hilo), fired an even-par 70 on the westside Big Island course. She has a one shot lead over Biola's Sami Penor (71) and a two-shot advantage over Taylor Stewart of Chico State (72).
There are 36 more holes to play, with the second and third rounds to continue on Tuesday and Wednesday at 7 a.m..
Biola and Western Washington are tied for the team lead after round one, both turning in a score card of 303 (+23). The top four teams are tightly bunched with Sonoma State and Concordia (Ore.) just one stroke back at +24.
The Vulcans are in seventh place (+33) in the ten-team field, just one shot behind second place Westminster (Utah). The second best Vulcan score behind Uchida is Michelle Kim (77), who is in 19th place.
