HILO, Hawai`i--Visiting Chaminade didn't waste any time getting the upper hand and putting a damper on UH Hilo's men's soccer season finale on Saturday afternoon.
The Silverswords scored 38 seconds into the match and three times in the first half on their way to a 3-1 victory over the Vulcans on Senior Day at the UHH Baseball Field. The Vulcans, who had won two in a row, finished the season at 5-11 overall and 4-7 in the Pacific West Conference. The Silverswords end their 2019 campaign at 9-6 on the year and 7-4 in the PacWest. It was their second consecutive winning season and a school record for most victories in a year.
Jamin Fonseca scored off the opening kick, just 38 seconds into the contest. Noah Mokeulehua added another score in the 15th minute (14:31) and Curtis Coburn put the island visitors up three scores at 24:57.
The first half shot disparity wasn't off the charts, but the Silverswords made the most of their opportunities. They had eight first-half shots (five on goal), while the Vulcans had five shots, two that had to be saved.
The second half was played more evenly, but the Vulcans couldn't get past the Chaminade defense until the final moments (88:39) when
Bennet Chergosky took a ball out of the air after a blocked header, and launched the ball over the head of everyone and into the goal.
Chaminade goalkeeper Michael Stafford had the shutout until that point and finished with four total saves. The shots for the match ended up close to even at 10 for the visitors with six of CUH's on goal, while UHH had 11 total, five on goal.
The Vulcans ended up with one more win overall than a season ago, including one more victory in conference play.
