HILO, Hawai`i--Vulcan junior forward
Christina Kanellou scored early in the second half to help her Hawaii Hilo teammates to a season-ending 1-0 victory on Saturday afternoon at the UH Hilo Soccer Field.
The Vulcans, who tied Chaminade 0-0 in their first meeting, finished 2019 on a three-match winning streak. They cap the year with a 5-4-2 mark in the Pacific West Conference and 6-7-4 overall. Chaminade will wrap up the season at 3-8-3 on the year and 3-7-1 in the PacWest.
After a scoreless first half, in which neither team had a shot on goal, the match looked like it could be headed towards another 110 minutes of 0-0 soccer, like on October 4 in Honolulu.
But five minutes after the break, Kanellou juked a defender at the top of the box and sent a left-footed shot screaming past the diving goalkeeper and into the right lower corner of the net. That goal at 50:41 would turn out to be all the Vulcans would need to end the season on a high note.
UH Hilo almost added another score about 20 minutes later when
Jodi Lillie took a perfect pass from
Brenna Rill and tapped it into the goal, but the play was waved off (offsides).Â
The second half featured many more scoring opportunities for both teams, but more by the Vulcans. UHH finished with nine shots, including five on goal. The Silverswords had six shots, one that had to be saved in a shutout situation for senior keeper
Bailey Cahill.Â
At 5-4-2 in conference play, the Vulcans finished in fifth place.Â
