LA MIRADA, Calif.--Host Biola was dialed in from long range, building a big lead early from behind the arch on their way to a 61-34 women's basketball win over Hawai`i Hilo on Tuesday night at Chase Gymnasium.
The Eagles hit 8-of-12 three-pointers in the first half alone and never trailed in winning their seventh straight game. Biola improved to 7-2 on the season and to 3-0 in the Pacific West Conference. The Vulcans fell to 1-5 on the year and to 0-3 in conference play.
Allie Navarette and
Kim Schmelz led the Vulcans with 13 points each. Navarette hit 7-of-8 free throw attempts and had eight rebounds. Schmelz did most of her damage from three-point range, hitting 3-of-8.
Biola ran out to a 10-0 lead out the gates, taking a double-digit lead 4:20 into the game on a three-pointer by Jelissa Puckett. UHH didn't get their first basket until 4:32 remained in the first quarter (Navarette) and they would trail at the end of the quarter, 13-4.
The Eagles continued their long-range marksmanship in the second quarter, taking a 17-point lead on a trey by Aysia Johnson. Before the half would end, the Eagles would have their eight three-balls from five different players, shooting 75 percent from downtown. Biola led 35-19 at intermission.
Both teams were cold in the third quarter, with Biola outscoring UHH 8-6, heading into the final period ahead, 43-25. The Vulcans continued to struggle to find their offensive range in the fourth quarter, ultimately scoring a season-low 34 points.
