Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Vulcan upset bid falls short vs. No. 10 UAA

HILO, Hawai`i—For three quarters and a chunk of the fourth, an upset alert was in play at the Civic Auditorium in Hilo.

The Hawaii Hilo women's basketball team had their fans on the edge of their seats on a Sunday afternoon, leading for a large portion of the game before the No. 10 nationally ranked Alaska Anchorage Seawolves pulled away late in the fourth quarter for a 59-47 non-conference win.

The Seawolves improved to 12-1 on the season with the win, their seventh straight. The Vulcans dropped their seventh consecutive contest and are now 1-7 as they wrapped up the 2019 calendar year.

Allie Navarette led the Vulcans with 12 points and nine rebounds, contributing to a larger accomplishment for the 6-foot junior. Her tenth point of the night put her at 1,000 for her career (she now has 1,002). She is also now the all-time leading scorer, having surpassed Sheiila Azevedo (2007-09), who had 978 in three seasons.

Additionally, Navarette is now just one rebound shy of tying Azevedo in that category (506), and she needs two blocked shots to rank No. 1 in all-time at UHH---still early in her junior year.

While those milestones were certainly a part of the game today, a potential huge upset was the lead story.

The game was tight throughout, with both teams playing good defense. UAA led at the end of the first quarter, 13-12 and the teams traded baskets and stops in the second quarter. The Vulcans were the ones to take a five-point lead on a Jenna Waki basket with just over a minute to play, and UHH went into the halftime locker room with a 28-25 margin.

It marked the first time this season that the Seawolves trailed at halftime. They shot just 22 percent in the first 20 minutes.

Navarette scored her 1,000th point to begin the second half, giving the Vulcans a 30-25 lead. UHH would push that lead to ten points on another Navarette basket with 6:35 remaining, before the Seawolves began their comeback.  UAA would go on a 10-0 run, led by Jahnna Hajdukovich, who couldn't miss. She nailed a trey, scored on a drive and then hit another three just prior to the buzzer to tie the game at 40-40 heading into the final quarter.

Mandi Kawaha hit a three to start the fourth quarter (43-40), but that would be UHH's last lead of the game. The Seawolves answered with another 10-0 run and then converted free throws down the stretch to seal the game. They outscored the Vulcans 19-7 in the fourth quarter.

Hajdukovich finished with 19 points off the bench, a season high. Safiyyah Yasin added 15 points for UAA, who is ranked No. 2 in the NCAA West Region.

After Navarette's near double-double Kim Schmelz was next with 11 points and Makayla Tablit had nine, hitting 3-of-5 three-point attempts. Mandi Kawaha had eight points, five assists and two steals.

When the calendar turns to 2020, the Vulcans will head into Pacific West Conference play only. They kick off January with a five-game homestand, starting on the 2nd with a 5 pm match-up with Fresno Pacific at the Civic Auditorium.
