LA MIRADA, Calif.—A road weary Hawai`i Hilo team trailed from start to finish in falling to Biola on Tuesday night at Chase Gymnasium, 79-63.
Playing their third road game of a four-contest swing through southern California, the Vulcans shot just 40 percent from the field, were 4-of-17 from three-point range and were out-boarded by the Eagles, 42-26.
The loss drops the Vulcans to 9-10 in the Pacific West Conference (11-12 overall) and into a tie for the sixth-place slot in the conference tournament race with Academy of Art. Biola, a second-year NCAA Division II member who is not yet eligible for post-season play, is now 9-9 in the PacWest and 13-11 on the year.
The Vulcans were led by
Larry Bush's 18 points.
Kupaa Harrison had 14 points and seven rebounds and
James Griffin added 12 points.
The score was tied early at 9-9 when things started to come undone for the Vulcans. A 14-2 Biola run put distance between them and the visitors that the Vulcans would never fully close. With 6:53 to go in the first half, the Eagles would own a 35-18 margin.
The halftime score was 44-31, and the Eagles led 60-45 at the halfway mark of the second half. The Vulcans then made their best run of the game (8-0), cutting the deficit to 60-53 with five of those points by Harrison.
But Biola answered, and despite one more brief UHH blitz (5-0), the Eagles would begin to pull away down the stretch.
With the win, Biola completes the season sweep of UH Hilo. The Vulcans forced the Eagles into 16 turnovers and only had eight themselves, but the hosts countered with four players in double figures led by Trevor Treinen's 19 points.
UH Hilo will put a wrap on this four-game southern California road trip with a Thursday encounter at Azusa Pacific.
