Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Vulcans use long ball again to top Eagles

LA MIRADA, Calif.—UH Hilo rained in nine three-pointers by five different players to pull away early from Biola on the road for a 56-48 women's basketball win at Chase Gymnasium.

The Vulcans hit 9-of-28 treys and led from start to finish to complete the season sweep over the Eagles. UH Hilo improved to 8-15 on the season and to 5-14 in the Pacific West Conference. Biola is now 7-11 in the PacWest and 9-15 this year.

After leading at the end of the first quarter, 14-10, the Vulcans began to pull away in the second period via long range. Three-balls on consecutive possessions by Maddie Beck, Mandi Kawaha, Allie Navarette and Sara Shimizu helped the visitors stretch the lead to 28-13 with 5:31 left in the half. They would take a 35-21 margin into halftime.

Another trey by Shimizu with three seconds left in the third quarter put the lead at 12 points heading into the fourth (48-36). The Eagles shaved four points off that margin in the fourth quarter but would get no closer than the final score (56-48).

Navarette led the Vulcans with 16 points and 10 rebounds, her 14th double-double of the season and sixth in a row. Kawaha and Shimizu were in double figures with 11 points each. Shimizu nailed 3-of-6 three-point attempts.

When these two teams met in Hilo, the Vulcans hit their first six three-pointers to rush out to an 18-0 lead. They would go on to drop in a season-high 11 treys in the game.

Jazz Benn led Biola and all scorers with 17 points.

UH Hilo will put a wrap on this four-game southern California road trip with a Thursday encounter at first-place Azusa Pacific.
