HILO, Hawai`i—There's an old adage that says, "it's not how you start, it's how you finish."
Tonight, it was how you start for the UH Hilo women's basketball team.
The Vulcans hit their first six three-pointers, raced out to an 18-0 lead and then held on for a 77-65 win over visiting Biola at the Civic Auditorium on Monday night.
UH Hilo improved to 6-12 overall with the win and won their third conference game this season (3-11). They beat a solid Biola team, who is now 7-8 in the PacWest and 9-12 overall.
The Vulcans had their most torrid quarter of the season, and easily their most productive five minutes of the year. They rained in six three-pointers, from five different people in the first quarter. With 4:24 to go, they led 18-0.
Biola finally got in the scoring column with 4:06 left, on free throws—in fact their first seven points of the game would come from the free throw line. They wouldn't get their first field goal until two seconds remained in the period, heading into the second quarter trailing, 23-9.
The Vulcans cooled in the second period, but still led at the break, 31-19. They then went on a 11-3 run to start the third quarter, looking to pull away. They led by 20 points twice in the period before Biola started to find their range.
The Eagles began the comeback process behind Jazz Benn and Tatum Brimley. Brimley ended with a career high 22 points, 16 in the second half. Benn, who did not score in the first half, found her spot in the left corner in front of the Biola bench, draining six treys in the second half and finishing with 20 points.
Biola would get as close as six points twice in the fourth, but the Vulcans made their insurance at the free throw line down the stretch.
Allie Navarette,
Alyssa Movchan and
Mandi Kawaha all hit critical charity tosses in the final minute.
Navarette finished with a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds, hitting 10-of-14 free throw attempts. Movchan had 19 points, missing just two shots all night and nailing four three-pointers.
Patience Taylor added 12 points.
The Vulcans hit a season-high 11 from behind the arch (11-for-23) and out-rebounded the much taller Eagles, 43-35.
The Vulcans continue their four-game homestand with a Friday night game versus Academy of Art. Start time for the women's and men's doubleheader is 5 pm.
