Vulcans edge Royals in exhibition tune-up

FULLERTON, Calif.--Jaryn Kanbara doubled and homered for UH Hilo to help lead the Vulcans to a 7-5 exhibition baseball win over Hope International on Thursday afternoon at Amerige Park.

The game was a tune-up for UHH prior to their conference series at Concordia (March 16, 18) and Azusa Pacific (March 21-23). The loss for the Royals, who are an NAIA team that plays in the Golden State Athletic Conference, moves them to 14-10 on the season.

The Vulcans scored three runs in the second, two in the third and two more in the fourth to account for their run production on the day. They had 11 hits, including two each by Kanbara and Kyle Yamada, who each had a double. Dylan Sugimoto had a two-bagger as well.

Thomas Warren was credited with the win as seven UHH pitchers took the mound by committee. The senior pitched two innings, gave up one hit and one run, and fanned two batters.

UH Hilo kicks off the four-game series with Concordia in Irvine on Saturday (March 16) with a doubleheader that starts at noon, Pacific time.
