HILO, Hawai`i—Destiny Castro had 27 points for visiting Chaminade and UH Hilo was unusually cold from three-point range as the Silverswords held off the Vulcans, 75-67 on Saturday night at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
On Senior Night, the Vulcans couldn't find the range from behind the arch, hitting only 2-of-20. Over the last part of the season, they had averaged close to eight treys a game.
Allie Navarette had 31 points for the Vulcans, who finished the year at 8-18 overall and 5-17 in the PacWest. Chaminade ends 2018-19 at 7-19 overall and 6-16 in conference play.
The Silverswords led from start to finish in this one. UH Hilo had one tie to start the second quarter (18-18), but Castro answered with a three-point play to spur a 9-0 run. That's how it went for most of the night for the Vulcans.
UH Hilo only had four points in the second quarter, and were 0-for-11 from three-point range in the first 20 minutes. Chaminade held a 31-20 lead at halftime.
Diamond Carter hit treys to start both the third quarter and the fourth as the Silverswords built their lead. But late in the contest, the Vulcans made one final run at their island rivals. UHH's first trey of the night, by
Maddie Beck, cut the lead to 60-53 with three minutes to play, although Chaminade would answer by getting Castro to the free throw line.
Still, the lead was just six after baskets by
Amber Vaughn and Navarette in the final minute, but it wasn't quite enough as Chaminade held on for the season sweep.
Navarette had another double-double with 31 points and 12 rebounds. She hit 14-of-16 free throws. Senior
Patience Taylor had 11 points in her final game.
Malia Lee had six boards and
Mandi Kawaha had six assists.
