AZUSA, Calif.--Host Azusa Pacific scored in nearly every inning and took advantage of gracious Hawai`i Hilo pitching during a 22-0 baseball win on Friday night at the Cougar Baseball Complex.
The Cougars had 17 hits and took advantage of 14 walks issued by Vulcan pitchers. The home team scored in every inning except the first and seventh to improve to 18-9 on the season and to 8-2 in the Pacific West Conference. The Vulcans are now 10-13 on the year and 8-8 in conference play.
After a solid first inning by Vulcan pitcher
Christian Sadler, the Cougars did damage in the second with five runs, and that was just the beginning. Before it was all over, ten different APU players had hits including four doubles and two home runs. Six different Vulcan pitchers went to the hill to try and stop the damage but the end result was 17 hits, 14 walks and six hit batters. And of course, the 22 runs.
The Vulcans had nine hits in the game, enough to score a least a few runs but they stranded nine runners on base. The Cougars used four pitchers in the combined shutout. UHH designated hitter
Chris Aubort had three of the hits, including a double, and
Mana Manago had two base hits.
With a 2-0 series lead, APU and the Vulcans will return to the field tomorrow (Saturday) for the final two games. The doubleheader will begin at noon Pacific time.
