UHH grabs early lead, holds on for 8-6 win

HILO, Hawai`i--Kobie Russell hit a three-run homer, helping to lead his Hawai`i Hilo team to a 5-0 first inning lead and the Vulcans would hold on to claim an 8-6 victory over Academy of Art on Thursday night at Wong Stadium.

It was the first game of a four-game series at Wong, and the two teams will square off again on Friday night at 6 pm. UH Hilo improved to 11-15 overall with the win and to 9-10 in the Pacific West Conference. Academy of Art is 12-11 on the year and 4-8 in conference play.

The Vulcans batted around in the first inning, sending ten batters to the plate. Kyle Yamada led the rally off with a double, Dylan Sugimoto walked and RJ Romo brought in the first run with an RBI-single. Russell then launched his second home run of the season to make it a 4-0 game. UHH would add more run on Mikey Rita's bunt single, bringing home Chris Aubort, who had walked.

That 5-0 lead gave the Vulcans a cushion that they would never give up, but they would also need. The Urban Knights got a run back in the top of the second courtesy of a pair of Vulcan errors, and would add two more in the fifth on a two-run single by Angel Mora. The fifth would be the last inning for Vulcan starter Kyle Alcorn, who gave up five hits, three runs, three walks and fanned three.

UH Hilo got one run back in the bottom half of the inning on Rustin Ho's RBI-double to make it 6-3. They seemingly put the game away in the sixth when Kamalu Neal ripped a two-run single to make the margin 8-3.

But Academy of Art rallied back. They scored a run in the eighth (8-4), and then an error and a two-run shot by Zak May cut the margin to two in the top of the ninth (8-6). That led to John Kea coming out of the bullpen, and the UHH closer promptly fanned the next two batters to end the game and pick up his fourth save of the season.

Russell finished the day with a pair of hits and three RBI. He had a double, home run and also stole a base. Ho was 2-for-2 with an RBI, two walks and two stolen bases. UH Hilo had nine hits and stole five bags--two by Ho and two by Rita.

Alcorn earned the win to improve to 3-3, with help from Kea and Brandyn Lee-Lehano, who pitched three innings and gave up just one run. Mason Verhees suffered his first loss of the year for the Urban Knights (3-1), lasting just one inning. Thomas Delgadillo had three of his teams' nine hits.
