Otters edge Vulcans, 2-1

TURLOCK, Calif.—Cal State Monterey Bay manufactured runs in the first and second innings, and that ended up being enough during a 2-1 win over Hawai`i Hilo on Saturday afternoon at the Tournament of Champions.

The Otters used a combination of sacrifice flies, walks and sacrifice bunts to plate two runs, and then held off a number of Vulcan rallies to secure the win. CSUMB is now 18-14 on the year, while the Vulcans fall to 22-13.

UH Hilo's Isabelle Mejia took the loss, just the second of the season for the senior pitcher/hitter (8-2). She also had the Vulcans' only RBI of the day at the plate, when she singled home Kiarra Lincoln in the fourth inning. Lincoln had singled and moved up two bases via a wild pitch and sacrifice bunt before Mejia's hit.

The Vulcans also had two runners on base in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings—including Vulcans on second and third in the sixth, but couldn't get any of them home. In the seventh, a runner's interference call ended the game.

Mejia pitched six innings, gave up just four hits and two runs. The Otters' Hayley Fein scattered seven hits over seven innings and allowed one run to improve to 12-6 in the pitcher's circle.

Vevesi Liilii had two hits for UH Hilo, but the Vulcans didn't have an extra base hit in the contest.

UH Hilo has to turn around and play No. 13 nationally ranked Chico State at 7 pm tonight (Saturday).
