HILO, Hawai`i—UH Hilo pounded out 21 hits, scored 19 runs and used no-hit pitching performances from
Leah Gonzales and
Isabelle Mejia to sweep Notre Dame de Namur on Wednesday afternoon at the UH Hilo Softball Field, 10-2 and 9-0.
Gonzales pitched 4.2 innings of no-hit relief in the first game, and Mejia followed up with a five-inning no-hitter in the nightcap as the Vulcans improved to 9-3 on the year and to 4-0 in the Pacific West Conference. The Argonauts leave Hawai`i still looking for their first win at 0-19 overall and 0-16 in the PacWest.
The Vulcans hit three home runs in the first game—the second of the year for
Markie Okamoto, the first this season for Gonzales, and the first-career long ball for senior outfielder
Maria Steadmon. Eight players accounted for nine hits and
Rayla Jacobs-Kea had two.
UH Hilo scored four runs in the first inning and four in the sixth to push the game into a mercy rule finish. Gonzales came out of the bullpen for the second straight day in relief of
Billi Derleth, who ran into trouble in the second inning. Gonzales got the win to improve to 3-1 on the season, pitching 4.2 innings without giving up a hit or a walk. She struck out five Argonauts.
In the second game, UH Hilo scored three runs in the first inning and five in the third to set up a five-inning mercy rule possibility. It was up to Mejia after that, and the senior mowed through the NDNU line-up without allowing a hit. She gave up one walk in the fourth inning and had fanned three Argos by the time the top of the fifth closed. She put NDNU down in order in the fifth to improve to 4-0 on the year.
Jacobs-Kea went 3-for-3 in the second game with three RBI and a double. For the day, she had five hits. Steadmon had two hits in the 9-0 win, scored twice and had two RBI. Gonzales and
Brinell Kaleikini also had a pair of hits in game two.
The Vulcans will take a seven-game winning streak into a Friday-Saturday doubleheader against Holy Names. Start time both days will be noon at the UH Hilo Softball Field.
