Spain named PacWest Pitcher of the Week

IRVINE, Calif.--Vulcan junior pitcher Dylan Spain has been named the Pacific West Conference Pitcher of the Week, announced today by the conference office.

Spain, a 6-foot-6 righthander from Honolulu's St. Louis High School, pitched his first complete game of the year during a 2-0 seven-inning shutout of Academy of Art on Saturday night. Other than a brief 30-pitch stint last weekend against Azusa Pacific, Spain had been sidelined with an injury since February 28.

Against the Urban Knights, he gave up just four hits, didn't walk a batter and fanned eight. He did not allow an extra-base hit in improving to 2-1 on the year with a 3.18 EA. He has an impressive 18-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Named to the PacWest All-Preseason team, Spain helped wrap up a four-game sweep of the Urban Knights with his shutout in the final game of the series. The Vulcans are now 14-15 overall and 12-10 in the PacWest. They will face Hawai`i Pacific this weekend in a four-game series on Oahu.
