POMONA, Calif.--A slow start and a late rally weren't quite enough as the Hawai`i Hilo volleyball team came up just short in their first match at the D2 West Region Showcase on Friday morning against Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Otters won three of four sets at Kellogg Arena, 25-14, 26-28, 25-21, 25-23. The Vulcans fell to 3-2 on the season, and will play again at 5 p.m. (Pacific time) against Seattle Pacific. Cal State Monterey Bay is now 4-2.
Bria Beale had 16 kills and 12 digs for the Vulcans, while
Amber Tai added 15 kills. Freshman
Emily Wade had a double-double with 13 kills and 10 total blocks.
Kaila Lizama led the UHH defense with 24 digs and freshman setter
Kendall Kott had 47 assists and 16 digs.
The Vulcans got off to a slow start, as the Otters dominiated the first set. The CCAA team jumped out to a 7-2 lead and never trailed in taking the first game, 25-14.Â
The second set was completely different as the two clubs traded blows and points. No team led by more than two points at any time during the set, although it was the Otters that had a two-point lead and set point at 24-22. But after a UH Hilo timeout, the Vulcans got a kill from Wade and two from Beale to take a 25-24 lead. Beale would get two more kills in the back-and-forth before an attack error by CSUMB gave the set to UHH, 28-26.
The Otters had a two to three point cushion for most of set three, winning the rubber match 25-21. They also looked to be well on their way to a victory in the fourth set, rolling out to a 5-1 lead. They lead the entire set, and were just four points away from the match at 21-16 before the Vulcans rallied back.
With
Alexandria Parisian on the serve, the Vulcans scored four straight points (21-20), and a few points later would tie the match at 22-22 on a kill by Wade. A Beale kill made it 23-23, but the Otters scored the final two points of the set to clinch the match (25-23).
Beale hit .325 on her way to 16 kills, and Wade converted her attempts (13 kills) at a .458 clip. Jenna Tobin had 27 kills for the Otters and 15 digs.
